What Two Divorces Actually Teach You

What Two Divorces Actually Teach You

I have been divorced twice. Amicably both times, but divorced. That is not a line I lead with to impress anyone. I lead with it because it is exactly why anything I say here is worth reading. I did not learn this from a book. I paid full price for it.

Here is what two divorces actually taught me, in plain terms, so maybe you can get the lesson for less than I did.

I was the variable I never studied

For years I blamed circumstances, timing, the other person. The common denominator in both marriages was me. That is not self-flagellation, it is the most useful realization I ever had. A man who will not examine his own part is guaranteed to repeat it.

I chose fast and called the rush certainty

Both times, I moved quickly and told myself the intensity was proof. It was not proof of anything except my own impatience. Speed felt like passion. It was really just skipping the part where you find out who someone actually is.

I never wrote down what kind of husband I meant to be

I ran professional kitchens on systems and specs. In my marriages, I improvised. I had no written standard for the partner I intended to be, so when pressure came, I winged it. Improvising is how good men lose the things they love.

Owning it was the only thing that changed anything

The turnaround did not start when I found the right woman. It started when I sat down, took responsibility, and rebuilt my standards on paper the way I would spec a menu. Then I met the woman I am married to now and ran the process instead of winging it. It worked, and it kept working.

The scars are the qualification

I am not here as a man who got it right the first time. I am here as a man who got it wrong, learned exactly why, and built something that lasts on the other side. That is the whole point. The failures are not the disqualification. Facing them honestly is the credential.

Questions men ask me about learning from divorce

Does getting divorced twice mean something is wrong with me?

It means you have patterns worth examining, not that you are broken. The men who look honestly at their part are the ones who finally break the cycle.

How do I make sure I do not do it again?

Own your role in the past, write your standards down, choose slowly, and run a real process instead of trusting the rush. That is the entire difference.

Is it too late for me to get it right?

No. I got it right the third time, later than I would have liked and better than I ever had it. The lesson holds at any age for any man willing to do the work.

The process starts with an honest readiness check. Read How to Know You Are Ready to Date After Divorce.
